Finding Mitchell Hill
Rising Sun, Mitchell Hill, Truro, TR1 1ED. The address and the registered office are the same thing, because the company is this building and nothing else.
Mitchell Hill is a hill, and that is the first useful thing to know. It climbs away from the lower part of the city, the pavement narrows as it goes, and the house stands on the uphill side of it. People who have walked up once remember the walk; people who have only looked at the postcode sometimes do not expect it.
The hill, drawn roughly
Not a map and not to scale โ contours across, the road climbing, the house on the uphill side, and the level approach coming in from the right.
Coming up on foot
- Straight up from town
- The short way and the steep way. It is a continuous climb rather than a flight of steps, so it is steady work rather than hard work, but it is work. Allow more time than the distance suggests, especially in the wet, when the pavement by the narrow stretch is worth taking slowly.
- The flatter way round
- Come at the hill from the side instead of the bottom and most of the climb is already behind you. It is longer on the map and easier on the legs, and it is what we suggest to anybody who would rather not take the hill head-on. Ring and whoever is on will talk you along it.
- The last stretch
- The pavement narrows outside the door and there is a step up off it. In the dark the light over the door is the thing to look for; the sign is easier to miss than the light.
- If you get it wrong
- Ring the house. Describing what is in front of you gets you here faster than a postcode does on a hill with this many short side turnings.
Arriving on wheels
There is no car park. There never has been one and there is nowhere on this plot to make one, so a party arriving by car parks wherever the hill and the signs allow and walks the last part like everybody else. We would rather put that in plain words here than have you drive up, find nothing, and have to reverse back down a narrow street in front of an audience.
The yard at the back takes deliveries and nothing else. It is not a turning circle, it is not overflow parking, and on a delivery morning it is full of empties waiting to go back.
If somebody in your party needs to be set down at the door rather than at the bottom of the hill, ring before the day and say so. It is usually possible to arrange, and it is much easier arranged than improvised on a Saturday evening.
At the door
- One step up off the pavement, then a second inside the lobby. The door opens inward and swells in wet weather.
- The function room is two further steps up off the bar side, through one door. That is the whole of the climb once you are inside.
- Anyone who needs a hand with the steps should say so at the counter, or on the telephone beforehand, and one of us will come round.
- Written enquiries go to house@dckhospitality.info and are read behind the bar. Directions are quicker over the telephone.
The rooms on each side of the seam are described on the house, and if you are coming for the room rather than the bar, taking a booking is the page that matters.
